What the container is made of, and what each part does

Pharmaceutical vials for parenteral water are made of Type I glass, a borosilicate with low alkali content that resists leaching and thermal shock. The closure is an elastomer stopper, usually bromobutyl or chlorobutyl rubber, chosen for low permeability, resealing after puncture and chemical inertness. An aluminium seal with a plastic flip-off cap crimps the stopper in place and shows whether it has been disturbed. Together they form the container closure system, which is validated to maintain sterility through sterilisation and storage.

The glass

Pharmacopoeias grade glass by hydrolytic resistance. Type I borosilicate releases very little alkali into water even after autoclaving, which matters for an unbuffered product whose pH would otherwise drift. It is clear, allowing inspection for particles, and survives the heat of terminal sterilisation. Soda-lime glass, Type III, is used for less demanding products.

Amber glass is used where light protection is needed; the preservative here is protected by the carton instead.

The stopper

Butyl rubbers have low gas and moisture permeability and reseal after a needle is withdrawn, which is what makes a multiple-entry container possible. They are formulated to minimise extractables and are tested for compatibility with the product. Coatings are sometimes applied to reduce interaction further.

The stopper is the only part of the system that is penetrated, so its resealing behaviour is the critical property.

The seal

Crimped aluminium holds the stopper under compression and cannot be removed without visible damage. The flip-off cap covers the stopper surface until first use. Both are tamper evidence rather than sterility barriers; the stopper provides the barrier.
