What benzyl alcohol becomes when it oxidises, and how it is detected

Published 26 October 2026 · REVIVE LAB UAE Research Desk · 5 min read
The benzylic carbon of benzyl alcohol is readily oxidised: first to benzaldehyde, the compound responsible for the smell of bitter almonds, and then to benzoic acid. Dissolved oxygen, light and trace metal ions drive the reaction; in a sealed glass vial kept dark it proceeds very slowly. Pharmacopoeial monographs for benzyl alcohol limit benzaldehyde and other related substances, and they are determined by gas or liquid chromatography.

The chemistry

A primary alcohol adjacent to an aromatic ring is activated toward oxidation because the ring stabilises the intermediate. Two steps remove four hydrogens: alcohol to aldehyde, aldehyde to acid. Both products are more water-soluble than the parent, and benzoic acid lowers the pH of the unbuffered solution slightly. The reaction is the same one that makes old benzyl alcohol smell of almonds.

It is also the first step of the metabolic pathway, performed there by enzymes.

What drives it

Oxygen in the headspace and dissolved in the water; ultraviolet light, which generates radicals; and metal ions, which catalyse. A full, sealed, dark vial has little of the first, none of the second and, in Type I glass, almost none of the third. An opened vial admits air with each entry.

This is the reason behind the storage line on the pack.

Detection and limits

Gas chromatography resolves benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and benzoic acid readily; liquid chromatography does the same. The monograph for benzyl alcohol as a raw material sets limits on these related substances, and the finished water is tested for preservative content. A product within specification has very little of either.
