The GHK-Cu "4,000 genes" figure: what the measurement was, and what it was not

Published 9 October 2026 · REVIVE LAB UAE Research Desk · 5 min read
The figure comes from a genomic-scale expression analysis published in 2010, which measured changes in the expression of several thousand human genes in cultured cells exposed to GHK-Cu. It is a transcriptome-wide count in vitro. It establishes that the compound has broad transcriptional effects in that system; it does not establish any outcome in a person.

What a transcriptome-wide count measures

A microarray or RNA-sequencing experiment measures the abundance of transcripts across most of the genome at once. Applying a statistical threshold produces a list of genes whose expression changed, and the length of that list is the number that gets quoted.

The length of the list depends on the threshold, the cell type, the concentration, the exposure time and the platform. Change any of those and the count changes. This is why a specific figure from one experiment should be read as a property of that experiment rather than as a constant of the compound.

Broad is not the same as strong

A compound that shifts thousands of transcripts is doing something wide-ranging upstream. That is interesting, and it is the reason the result is cited. It says nothing about the size of any individual effect, nor about whether any of those transcriptional changes produce a measurable outcome in tissue.

The honest reading is: this is a hypothesis-generating result about mechanism breadth. Treating it as a claim about efficacy skips every step between a dish and an organism.

Why this matters when buying

A supplier repeating the number as a benefit claim is telling you about their marketing, not about their material. What should decide a purchase is whether the lot is what it says it is: identity confirmed by mass spectrometry, purity by HPLC, and a certificate that matches the number printed on the carton.

Every REVIVE carton carries an RVL code that can be checked at revivelab.ae/verify before it is opened.
