The in vivo matrix study, what a wound chamber measures, and what accumulated inside it

Published 26 October 2026 · REVIVE LAB UAE Research Desk · 5 min read
Maquart and colleagues reported in 1993 that GHK-Cu delivered into wound chambers — perforated cylinders implanted under the skin of rats, which fill with granulation tissue over days — increased the dry weight of the tissue formed and its content of collagen, glycosaminoglycans and DNA relative to vehicle, with the free peptide and free copper less effective. The wound chamber is a standard model for measuring matrix deposition in a defined space. The study is the principal in vivo evidence that the culture effects on matrix synthesis translate to a living tissue in rodents.

The model

A sterile perforated cylinder placed subcutaneously becomes a dead space that the body fills with granulation tissue: fibroblasts, new vessels and matrix. Substances introduced into the chamber act on that tissue as it forms, and the chamber can be recovered and its contents weighed and analysed. It isolates matrix deposition from wound contraction and re-epithelialisation, which confounds measurement in open wounds.

It is a model of granulation, not of a healing skin wound as a whole.

What was found

More tissue, more collagen, more glycosaminoglycans, more DNA — the last indicating more cells — in chambers receiving the complex. The components alone did less. The effect on collagen was accompanied by increased glycosaminoglycan accumulation, which the group interpreted as a general stimulation of matrix production rather than a collagen-specific one.

Animal numbers were modest and the work has not been widely replicated outside the group.

Why it is here

Because it is the in vivo anchor of the matrix literature and a reader should know what the model shows and what it does not. It describes a study and no use of the pack.

GHK-Cu is supplied by REVIVE LAB UAE for laboratory research use only, with identity by mass spectrometry and purity by HPLC for the batch. It is not for human or veterinary use, and no dosing, administration or protocol guidance is provided.
