Where copper travels in blood, and the small fraction that GHK was proposed to carry

Published 26 October 2026 · REVIVE LAB UAE Research Desk · 5 min read
About two thirds or more of plasma copper is held tightly in ceruloplasmin, a copper-containing enzyme made by the liver, and is not freely exchangeable. The remainder is the exchangeable pool: copper bound to albumin at its amino-terminal site, to the protein transcuprein, and to small ligands — amino acids, chiefly histidine, and peptides. Lau and Sarkar reported in the Biochemical Journal in 1981 that GHK binds copper(II) with an affinity close to that of albumin and can exchange copper with it, which is the basis of the proposal, made by Pickart, that the tripeptide is a physiological copper carrier delivering the metal to cells. The peptide is present in plasma at nanomolar concentration, so its share of total copper is small.

The carriers

Ceruloplasmin carries six copper atoms per molecule and functions as a ferroxidase; its copper is structural and is released only when the protein is degraded. Albumin binds one copper tightly at a site formed by its first three residues, including a histidine at position 3 — a motif that resembles GHK itself. Histidine and other amino acids form ternary complexes with albumin-bound copper and shuttle it. This exchangeable pool is what cells draw on through the transporter CTR1.

Wilson disease, in which copper excretion fails, and Menkes disease, in which absorption fails, define the two ends of copper handling.

Where GHK sits

With an affinity comparable to the albumin site and a structure that mirrors it, GHK can take copper from albumin and give it back; in vitro the exchange is measurable. At nanomolar plasma concentration it holds a tiny fraction of the exchangeable pool at any moment, but a fast-exchanging small ligand can still move copper into cells more readily than a large protein. Whether this happens to a meaningful degree in vivo is the question the carrier hypothesis asks and has not fully answered.

The page on the two mechanism hypotheses sets out what rides on it.

Why it is here

Because the compound is a copper complex and a reader should know what copper does in blood before weighing claims about it. It describes biochemistry and no use of the pack.

GHK-Cu is supplied by REVIVE LAB UAE for laboratory research use only, with identity by mass spectrometry and purity by HPLC for the batch. It is not for human or veterinary use, and no dosing, administration or protocol guidance is provided.
