The antioxidant chemistry attributed to GHK-Cu, what copper complexes can do in a test tube, and where the evidence stops

Published 26 October 2026 · REVIVE LAB UAE Research Desk · 5 min read
Superoxide dismutase enzymes use copper or manganese to convert superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, and simple copper complexes with suitable ligands catalyse the same reaction in a test tube, often with high activity per copper atom. GHK-Cu has been reported to show such activity, and Pickart and colleagues also reported that the complex inhibited the release of iron from ferritin, a potential source of Fenton chemistry. These are chemical observations in cell-free or simple systems. Translating them into an antioxidant effect in a tissue requires the complex to reach the site intact, at a concentration that competes with the body own enzymes and antioxidants, and that step has not been shown.

The chemistry

Dismutation needs a metal that can accept an electron from one superoxide and give it to another; copper does this readily when its ligands leave a coordination site open and hold the redox potential in the right range. Many copper-amino acid and copper-peptide complexes qualify. Activity is measured by competition assays against a superoxide-detecting dye, and results are expressed relative to the enzyme.

Such complexes are studied as drug candidates in their own right, with mixed results in vivo.

The ferritin observation

Ferritin stores iron; agents that release iron from it supply free iron for radical chemistry. The Pickart report that GHK-Cu reduced iron release from ferritin in vitro was offered as a second antioxidant mechanism. It is a cell-free finding and has not been independently extended.

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory review pages on this site collect the wider claims.

Why it is here

Because antioxidant language attaches to this compound freely, and a reader should know that it rests on test-tube chemistry that is real and limited. It describes that chemistry and no use of the pack.

GHK-Cu is supplied by REVIVE LAB UAE for laboratory research use only, with identity by mass spectrometry and purity by HPLC for the batch. It is not for human or veterinary use, and no dosing, administration or protocol guidance is provided.
