What serum does to the metal in a GLOW experiment

Published 24 October 2026 · REVIVE LAB UAE Research Desk · 5 min read
Albumin carries most of the exchangeable copper in blood and binds it tightly at a dedicated site. Serum-containing culture medium therefore contains a high-affinity copper acceptor. Added GHK-Cu competes with it for its own metal, and the fraction of copper that stays with GHK in a dish depends on how much serum is present. This applies to GLOW as to GHK-Cu alone.

Albumin as a copper carrier

Albumin has a well-characterised N-terminal copper binding site and is present in serum at high concentration. In medium supplemented with serum, albumin is typically present in great molar excess over any added peptide, and it binds copper strongly.

This is established protein chemistry and is independent of which peptide delivered the copper.

What it means for the blend

The copper that arrives with GHK-Cu may partition toward albumin in proportion to serum content. Two experiments at the same nominal GLOW concentration in media with different serum percentages present different copper speciation, and so are not the same condition. The two plain peptides are unaffected by this mechanism, so the blend composition in solution shifts in a way the label cannot show.

Serum-free medium removes the variable; serum-containing medium at a stated percentage is at least a defined one.

Reading results with this in mind

A result in serum-containing medium is a result about the blend plus albumin. Comparing it with serum-free work compares two chemistries. This is a description of a known confounder, not a protocol, and no guidance on medium is given here.

The GLOW blend is supplied by REVIVE LAB UAE for laboratory research use only, with batch identity by mass spectrometry and purity by HPLC. It is not for human or veterinary use, and no dosing, administration or protocol guidance is provided.
