The largest controlled trial of growth hormone in recreational athletes, and its one positive result

Meinhardt and colleagues randomised 96 recreationally trained adults, 63 men and 33 women, to growth hormone or placebo for eight weeks, with the men further randomised to testosterone or placebo. Sprint capacity on a cycle ergometer improved by about four per cent with growth hormone alone and more in men who also received testosterone, and returned to baseline six weeks after stopping. Strength, power, aerobic capacity and body composition apart from a shift from fat to lean did not change. Fluid retention and joint symptoms were more frequent. It remains the largest controlled trial of the hormone in this population.

Body composition was measured by several methods. The trial was powered for these outcomes and followed participants after washout.

The result and its reading

A small, statistically significant improvement in one anaerobic measure, with no effect on the others. The authors noted the effect might matter at elite level, where margins are small, and that it disappeared on stopping. The lean-mass gain was partly fluid. The trial is cited both as evidence that the hormone does something and as evidence that it does very little, and both readings are fair.

It also showed the IGF-1 and collagen marker changes that the biomarker detection test relies on.
