What Is the Pituitary Gland's Role in Growth Hormone Production?
Often called the "master gland," the pituitary sits at the base of the brain and regulates multiple hormone systems; its anterior lobe contains the specialized cells, called somatotrophs, responsible for synthesizing and secreting growth hormone. These cells do not operate independently — they respond to signals from the hypothalamus immediately above the pituitary, which sends growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) to stimulate secretion and somatostatin to suppress it.
This hypothalamic-pituitary relationship forms a tightly regulated feedback loop: rising IGF-1 and growth hormone levels signal back to the hypothalamus and pituitary to reduce further release, keeping the system in balance under normal physiology. Damage to either the pituitary itself or the hypothalamic signaling pathway — from a tumor, surgery, radiation, or injury — is the most common documented cause of acquired growth hormone deficiency in adults.
