What the monograph says the product is, and the two rules it attaches

The United States Pharmacopeia defines Bacteriostatic Water for Injection as sterile water for injection containing one or more suitable antimicrobial agents, supplied in prefilled syringes or vials not larger than 30 mL, and labelled to state that it is not for use in newborns. The container limit exists because the product is designed to be entered more than once, and the newborn warning dates from the 1982 reports of benzyl alcohol toxicity in premature infants. The product in this catalogue conforms to that definition with 0.9 per cent benzyl alcohol as the agent.

Sterile water for injection, plus an agent

The base is water meeting the sterile water for injection monograph: purified, sterilised, with limits on endotoxin and on conductivity and organic carbon. To that is added an antimicrobial agent — benzyl alcohol is the usual choice — at a concentration shown effective by the pharmacopoeial test. Nothing else is present: no salt, no buffer, no tonicity agent.

The monograph does not fix the agent or its concentration; it requires effectiveness.

The 30 mL limit

Multiple-entry containers are entered repeatedly, and each entry is an opportunity for contamination. Limiting the volume limits how long a container stays in service and how much contaminated product one lapse could affect. Larger volumes of water for injection are sold without preservative as single-use.

The 3 mL vials in this pack are well inside the limit.

The newborn label

Required since benzyl alcohol was linked to a fatal syndrome in premature infants in 1982. It appears on every container of bacteriostatic water regardless of intended use, and it appears on the vials in this pack. The reason is set out on its own page.

Bacteriostatic water is supplied by REVIVE LAB UAE as a diluent for lyophilised research peptides, for laboratory research use only. It is not for human or veterinary use, and no dosing, administration or protocol guidance is provided.
