The conditions for which somatropin is licensed, as a record, and what the list says about the hormone

Published 26 October 2026 · REVIVE LAB UAE Research Desk · 5 min read
Regulators have approved somatropin for growth failure in children with growth hormone deficiency, Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, chronic kidney disease, SHOX gene deficiency and Noonan syndrome, for children born small for gestational age who do not catch up, and in the United States for idiopathic short stature, approved in 2003; and in adults for growth hormone deficiency, HIV-associated wasting, approved in 1996, and short bowel syndrome, approved in 2003. Each indication rests on trials showing growth or composition benefit in that specific population, and several are not deficiency states at all.

The paediatric indications

Deficiency was the original indication from 1985. Turner syndrome and chronic kidney disease followed in the 1990s on trials showing improved adult height despite normal hormone levels. Prader-Willi syndrome was added for composition and growth. Small for gestational age and SHOX deficiency were added in the 2000s, and Noonan syndrome later. Idiopathic short stature — short children with no identifiable cause — was approved in the United States but not in Europe, and remains debated.

In most of these the hormone is used pharmacologically rather than as replacement.

The adult indications

Adult deficiency followed the 1989 trials. HIV-associated wasting was approved at a time when wasting was a leading cause of death in the disease and the hormone increased lean mass. Short bowel syndrome was approved on trials showing reduced dependence on intravenous nutrition. The HIV indication has become rare with modern antiviral treatment.

No regulator has approved the hormone for ageing, body composition in healthy adults, or athletic performance.

Why the list is here

Because what a hormone is approved for is part of what is established about it, and the boundary of the list is as informative as its contents. The pack is a research material and is not approved for anything.

Somatropin is supplied by REVIVE LAB UAE for laboratory research use only, with identity and purity documented for the batch. It is not for human or veterinary use, and no dosing, administration or protocol guidance is provided.
