The 2004 mouse study that linked the protein to follicle stem cells, and what it did and did not show

Published 26 October 2026 · REVIVE LAB UAE Research Desk · 5 min read
Philp, Kleinman and colleagues reported in the FASEB Journal in 2004 that thymosin beta-4 given to mice accelerated hair regrowth after depilation and that transgenic mice overexpressing the protein grew hair faster, while mice with reduced expression grew it slower. In culture the protein increased migration of follicle stem cells and their expression of matrix-degrading enzymes, and the authors proposed that it mobilised the stem cells of the follicle bulge. The study is the source of hair-related claims about thymosin beta-4 and its fragments. It is a mouse and cell study of the full-length protein, and no human trial of the protein or any fragment for hair has been published.

What was measured

Rate of regrowth after depilation in treated and untreated mice, histology of follicles, and the behaviour of isolated follicle stem cells in culture — migration, differentiation markers, and expression of a matrix metalloproteinase. The transgenic and knockdown mice provided genetic support in both directions. Effects were consistent with the migration-promoting activity seen in every other model.

The study came from the laboratory that had done the dermal and corneal wound work.

What follows and what does not

That the protein can act on follicle stem cells in mice. It does not follow that a fragment acts the same way, that the effect occurs in human follicles, or that any product based on it does anything for hair in people; none of these has been tested in published work. The page on the beta-thymosin isoforms notes that follicle and migration effects run through the same actin biology as the tumour-marker findings.

This is a single study, two decades old, without human extension.

Why it is here

Because hair claims attach to TB-500 freely and a reader should see the one study they rest on. It describes a study and no use of the pack.

The BPC-157 + TB500 blend is supplied by REVIVE LAB UAE for laboratory research use only, with identity by mass spectrometry and purity by HPLC for each component of the batch. It is not for human or veterinary use, and no dosing, administration or protocol guidance is provided.
