What Did the Maquart 1988 GHK-Cu Study Report?
Short answer: Maquart and colleagues at the University of Reims reported in FEBS Letters in 1988 that GHK-Cu added to cultures of human skin fibroblasts increased collagen synthesis, measured by incorporation of labelled proline, in a concentration-dependent way. It was among the first independent studies — not from Pickart — to report a tissue-related effect of the complex, and it is the root of the collagen claims that followed.
The study was in culture, not in people: cells in a dish, with the peptide added to the medium. Later work from the same group in 1993 reported effects on wound healing in rats. Neither is a human trial.
